Learning Shibori in Japan: My Summer in Arimatsu

I feel incredibly fortunate to have had the opportunity to continue my journey with Shibori in Japan this summer.

My first stop was Arimatsu, Nagoya—home to centuries-old traditions of Arimatsu Shibori. I joined the master Shibori course at Studio Suzusan for the third summer in a row, and once again, it was an unforgettable experience.

Under the guidance of Shibori Master Murase-sensei, I learned two beautiful techniques: Tsukidashi Kanoko and Tegumo Shibori—both classic styles of Arimatsu Shibori. He also introduced me to the intricate art of creating stencil patterns, a technique I now consider a personal treasure. I’ve already begun incorporating it into my own designs and can’t wait to share the results.

Stay tuned for my next blog post, where I’ll take you to Tokushima for more Shibori adventures!
